What Is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a prescription drug initially used to shrink an enlarged prostate. According to different doctors around the world, finasteride treats male pattern baldness by lowering the levels of DHT.

DHT is a hormone that is produced as a product of testosterone. It’s crucial in your early life and adolescence with your body hair and facial. In your scalp can cause your hair follicles to fall. As time goes by, this can affect your hair’s natural growth and stops hair from growing.

It commonly affects the hair follicles near the hairline and crown. As a result, the classic hairline develops in the early stages of male pattern baldness.

Research shows that a typical dose of finasteride can eliminate almost 70% of DHT; this reduction helps protect your hair from damage and prevent hair loss. For many men, it results in regrowth in the parts of their scalp that have already been affected.

However, since finasteride targets DHT, it will not work for other hair loss factors such as; stress, chemotherapy, or medication.

What Is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a type of medication that is called a hair growth stimulator. It works by improving blood vessels inside your scalp, which improves blood flow to your hair follicles.

In addition to increasing blood flow, hair specialists believe minoxidil lengthens the anagen phase of your hair’s natural growth cycle.

This means that every hair on your scalp grows as part of a cycle that consist of three to four phases which are the next ones:

  • Anagen. During the first phase, your hair follicle works to produce fiber, which slowly grows to its full length over the years, resulting in hair growth that most of us see regularly.
  • Catagen. During this phase, the hair shrinks in diameter.
  • Telogen. The hair rests and is replaced by new hair, which grows from the same follicle.
  • Exogen. The old hair separates, and new hair replaces it.

Minoxidil works by extending the time of the anagen phase, allowing your hair growth to last longer periods before shedding. This can result in increased hair growth in the areas affected by male pattern baldness.

Since it first came to the markets in the 90s, studies have looked at its efficacy with positive results. A study published in the Journal of Dermatologic Therapy in 2015 found that 59 percent of men with hair loss showed improvements after one year of using minoxidil.

It is important to understand that minoxidil does not impact your production of androgen hormones, meaning that it won’t prevent hair loss at the follicular level. It is best to think of minoxidil as a hair growth stimulator and not as a medication for protecting your hair from the effects of male pattern baldness.

Minoxidil vs Finasteride: Which One Is The Correct For Me?

Minoxidil and finasteride are good for anyone starting to notice a receding hairline or other male pattern baldness sign.

You don’t need to have minimum hair loss to use minoxidil or finasteride. However, it is crucial to understand that if you have advanced hair loss, you may not be able to regain all of your hair with these medications.

Latest Hair Loss Solutions

At Hairfix, we have the best hair loss solutions depending on your needs. If you have minimum hair loss, then mesotherapy is a great option. In case of severe hair loss, we recommend a hair transplant.

  • What Is Mesotherapy. Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses microinjections of vitamins for hair loss, antioxidants, enzymes, minerals, and amino acids to improve hair quality in terms of strength, growth, and volume. Mesotherapy can help with numerous health and beauty-related issues but is most widely used for skin and hair. Hair mesotherapy is a safe and fast method: each session lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes and is suitable for both men and women.
  • Hair Transplant. This procedure consists of extracting hair from the back of the head to later implant it in the areas affected by alopecia, such as the crown and hairline.

With the DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) technique, natural-looking results and high survival rates of the transplanted follicles are obtained without creating cuts, so there are no scars left behind.

Minoxidil and finasteride have many benefits, but it’s important to know that other treatments such as mesotherapy or hair transplants have higher success rates.
